HOD – Paediatric Nephrology, Institute Of Child Health Kolkata
Dr. Rajiv Sinha is a distinguished paediatric nephrologist currently practising in Kolkata. Following completion of his postgraduate medical training in India, he underwent advanced subspecialty training in Paediatric Nephrology in the United Kingdom and Canada. He was subsequently awarded the Certificate of Completion of Training (CCT) in Paediatric Nephrology.
He is presently serving as Professor and Head of the Division of Paediatric Nephrology at the Institute of Child Health, Kolkata. In this role, he has been instrumental in establishing Eastern India’s first comprehensive academic Paediatric Nephrology unit. He has also initiated a structured subspecialty training program in paediatric nephrology, thereby contributing significantly to the advancement of clinical services, academic training, and research in the region.
Dr. Sinha’s clinical practice is focused on the delivery of evidence-based patient-centered care for children with a broad spectrum of renal disorders, including those requiring kidney replacement therapy. He has extensive experience in the management of steroid-resistant nephrotic syndrome, lupus nephritis, chronic kidney disease and acute kidney injury. In addition, he provides specialized care for inherited and genetic renal conditions, including congenital nephrotic syndrome and inherited tubular disorders.
Paediatric kidney transplantation constitutes a major area of his clinical interest and expertise. He is actively involved in performing kidney transplantation in children, including those with end-stage renal disease secondary to congenital anomalies of the urinary tract and genetic disorders. He has considerable experience in managing post transplantation low-weight children, including those weighing less than 10 kilograms. Recognizing the financial challenges associated with the management of paediatric end-stage renal disease, Dr. Sinha has actively engaged with governmental agencies and non-governmental organizations to facilitate improved access to treatment and mitigate financial constraints for affected families.
Dr. Sinha is an active contributor to academic medicine and has authored more than 200 publications in reputed national and international peer-reviewed journals. His scholarly work reflects a sustained commitment to advancing the field of Paediatric Nephrology, particularly within resource-constrained settings.
He is a Fellow of the Royal College of Paediatrics and Child Health (UK) and serves as an Educational Ambassador for the International Society of Nephrology. He is also a Fellow of the Indian Academy of Pediatrics, in recognition of his contributions to paediatric healthcare.
In addition to his clinical and research responsibilities, Dr. Sinha is actively involved in postgraduate medical education. He serves as an examiner for the Royal College of Paediatrics and Child Health (UK) and is a member of the specialist board in Paediatric Nephrology for the National Board of Examinations, India. Through these roles, he contributes to the maintenance of high standards in specialist training and assessment.
He has played a key role in the development of specialized fellowship programs in paediatric nephrology and continues to mentor trainees within a multidisciplinary framework. His contributions have supported the training of numerous paediatricians and nephrologists, many of whom are now contributing to the field both nationally and internationally.
Dr. Sinha’s career is characterized by sustained excellence in clinical practice, academic leadership, and capacity building. His contributions continue to influence the advancement of Paediatric Nephrology services and education at both national and international levels.
